We often hear, “It’s June, you must be winding down!” Actually, at SMS it is just the opposite! It is a very busy month with lots of learning continuing, and an even greater number of activities and field trips than usual. Please keep reading for some highlights.
Congratulations to Ben Harrington, Matthew Marino and Marcus Nickles who won the “low gross” at our SD 83 Middle School Golf Tournament last week. Thanks to Mr. Lynka for coaching and to Mrs. Limber and Mr. Rodwell who are coaching our mountain bike team. Max looks like he enjoyed the muddy ride!
Thanks to our wonderful PAC!
So many of the extra activities students have the opportunity to participate in would not be possible without the support of our tremendous PAC. We are sad to be losing Suzy Beckner and Kari Wilkinson from our executive as they will no longer be middle school parents. We would like to thank them and their loyal (and hopefully continuing) team, Rob Meadows, Loretta Dedood and Darcy Caulkins for all of their work on behalf of our students and staff. We hope to see many new parents at our PAC meetings next year.
Grade 5 Visits
Our counselors, Sandy Little and Christel Mueller have been busy helping our next year’s grade 6 students transition successfully to middle school. Mr. Matheson, Mme Jègues and I visited our feeder schools to speak with the grade 5s, we had a great turnout at the parent information night, and next week we look forward to welcoming the students to SMS. On Monday, May 10th, students entering our Late French Immersion program will be at SMS, our Early French Immersion students on Tuesday at 12:45, and students joining our English track on Thursday at 11:05.
Our fabulous leadership group is continuing to plan events. They are wrapping up a very busy and productive year with a “Fun Hat and Hair Day” on June 14 and a “Pajama Day” on the 20th. Thanks to this talented group of students who have planned many fun events throughout the year and also given back to our community in so many ways.
We are all curious to discover what shows up in our front display case. These teasers appeared last week. Stay tuned!
SMS is fortunate to be hosting the SD 83 Math Olympics on June 6th which means our gym will be full of “mathletes” from our school and other participating schools. Several of our teams are participating. Please feel free to stop by and see fantastic learning in action!
Student Self Assessment of the BC Ministry of Education Core Competencies
Between May 5th and 14th, students will be completing their self assessment of the core competencies which are a big focus of the new curriculum at SMS. You will be able to view your child’s self assessment with their report cards which are available on Student Connect June 27th.
Shuswap Middle School Student Achievement Plan
We had a great turnout on Tuesday, May 7th to review our current Achievement Plan. Thanks to Mme Weir who organized data presentations about our progress with our numeracy, literacy and attendance goals and to Ms. MacDonald who facilitated a talking circle which allowed all participants to provide feedback. We were all very impressed by the contributions of students Devyn Hughes and Evan Archer whose insights into how mental health impacts attendance for our students were powerful. Invitations for the conversation went to each of our Band Education Coordinators, PAC, District 83 Senior Leadership Team, Teachers and CUPE staff as well as our student representatives. The draft of our 2019/20 plan will be available on our website mid-June.
The annual SMS Talent Show takes place on Monday, June 10th after lunch. Auditions have been taking place over the past week and continue today. Thanks to Mr. Lynka for organizing the show and congratulations to all students who have been chosen to perform.
