Steps to follow when you have a concern….when you advocate on behalf of your child the way you express your concerns has an effect on the outcome.
Do your best and control your emotions, be responsible and respectful. The less defensive people act, the easier it is for them to listen to your concerns. You can provide information that will help professionals make a decision that meets the needs of your child.
Consider the views of others. You may not agree, but by listening, you will understand where they are “coming from” and where a solution might be found. When both sides are heard, it is easier to work together to find solutions.
Document your information. It is easy to get confused or forget. Jot down notes, record dates of meetings, phone calls, etc… Keep copies of everything you send and receive.
Commit to resolution. Ensure you are working to solve the problem. Be honest with your self and others. Plan how the problem will be solved. Think of the effect your suggestion plan will have. Act in good faith; assume the best of others. Be both flexible and open minded.

SMS Leadership Students – Bryn and Taylor
SMS has a tremendous student leadership team consisting of 72 Grade 7 & 8 students. Bryn and Taylor outlined their efforts from last year and plans for 2018/19. Full details can be found in the PAC Minutes.
2018/19 Treasurers Report and Budget
This year’s draft budget was accepted. Requests for funding from staff will be accepted up to November 5th, with final spending decisions made at the November 19th PAC Meeting. Full details can be found in the PAC Minutes.
Wendy Woodhurst and Chris Matheson provided an overview to the start of the school year.
Purdy’s Chocolate Fundraiser
The SMS PAC undertakes one major fundraiser per year. The Purdy’s order forms will be sent home with students prior to the Thanksgiving Weekend. Final orders are due November 15th. The Purdy’s order will arrive and be sorted on Thursday, November 29th (parents and students needed for sorting!); and available to go home on Friday, November 30th. This year’s sales goal is $20,000! SALMAR Movie Passes will be up for grabs for the top sales to individual students.
SMS Lunch Concerns from Parents
Concerns discussed about the length of lines at the SMS Lunch Counter. Pizza sales have doubled from last year and staff are working to find solutions to make the lines go quick, and to ensure there is enough food for all students. If parents would like to help out, please contact the office! Fridays are definitely the busiest day for pizza. Getting pizza on Mondays is a great alternative!
