Community Focus Goes beyond the Walls of SMS

Food Drive

Thank you to all the SMS families and staff who have worked hard to encourage, remind, and support the SMS Food Drive, in support of the Second Harvest Food Bank. Ms. Mitchellès students were instrumental in making this happen with her support and guidance. Ms. Kahan was also instrumental in encouraging the students with her fun ideas and generosity!

Here is a little information we found out about this local charity:

Shuswap Second Harvest is a non-profit food program that serves 200 less fortunate families each week. We are 100% volunteer and donation-based program: no paid employees, no paid admin fees, and no government assistance. According to the Second Harvest Facebook Page, the food bank is looking for a volunteer to do some carpentry work and handyman things at the Food Bank.

Would any of our SMS community members be interested in helping the Second Harvest Food Bank? Please call (250) 253-7270 for more information.

Letter Writing Campaign

To develop a sense of caring connection between some of our youth and seniors in the community, over 300 letters have been written, and beautiful works of art have been donated, to both Pioneer Lodge and Hillside Village. Many of us can only imagine how difficult it would be to have only one designated visitor over the holiday break. Unfortunately, many long-term care facilities will need to follow this precaution throughout Canada this year. This multi-class project was quite emotional, and we are proud to see your children taking part wholeheartedly in this important outreach project!

Here is what we discovered about these two residences:

Pioneer Lodge, located in Salmon Arm, has the philosophy of The Good Samaritan Society, and is committed to providing a quality of care and support that will enable the elderly and the physically and mentally challenged to experience an optimum quality of life. This facility has 28 one-bedroom and 2 studio publicly subsidized assisted living units.

Good Samaritan Hillside Village consists of six 12-bedroom duplex homes (72 beds) for the care of persons with dementia as well as those who require complex care and there are 40 suites in the main building. Admission to the residency program is through the Community Services of Interior Health.

Kind regards,

Sydney Griffith
