Reflecting on Remembrance Day

Posted on 2020-11-10 08:00:00 +0000 UTC

To recognize the sacrifices and achievements of those who have served and continue to serve, Kaeli and I were able to visit each class for a Remembrance day presentation. While we educated about the efforts of Indigenous veterans, there was particular emphasis on the connections we all have to relatives and ancestors who were and continue to be guardians of our freedom through their service to our country. Each student made a Thunderbird poppy; symbolic of the power and privilege provided to us by those who have fought for us and watch over us as a community collective – the design recognition belongs to the S-hwu-hwa’us rendering of the Thunderbird.

Students watched videos about Tommy Prince, the Aboriginal War Veterans monument in Ottawa and saw a video in the library with Mme Reed.

The poppies were assembled into wreaths and Ms. MacDonald and I walked with her class to the DESC to do a wreath presentation to senior leadership at 11:30, followed by a presentation to 2 war veterans at the legion at noon (Harry and Brenda – who is also Indigenous:).
Below is a picture of our display outside the Indigenous room!

Respectfully submitted,

Theresa

Thank you, Theresa and Kaeli, for your thoughtful conversations about Remembrance Day.

Classes represented their reflections on Remembrance Day in a variety of ways. Above are Indigenous poppies from classes throughout SMS, as well as a writing reflection from Mme Russell’s class.

Below are some photos taken of Ms. MacDonald’s class who wanted to show respect by sharing the school’s work in our community – at the Legion and the District Education Support Centre. Thank you for doing this on behalf of SMS.
